The Paparazzi, a new musical by Algonquin Theater Productions, is gearing up for two public readings as part of a plan to debut on Broadway in 2018.
The musical, being billed as a show “that shines a spotlight on the people who shine the spotlight on celebrities,” is being presented first in two public readings on September 22 at the Davenport Theatre, 354 West 45th Street.
It will be directed by Sportiello and feature a cast of Broadway and Off Broadway performers.
The play presents what the show calls a”story torn right out of today’s headlines” and “an industry gone mad, where words like ‘facts’ and ‘truth’ are less important than ‘speed’ and ‘headlines.'”
It’s also a universe “where personal privacy is a thing of the past and no one’s secrets are safe,” although this story is set to music.
The Paparazzi has music and lyrics by Al Tapper (Sessions, David, National Pastime) and book by Tony Sportiello (Second Chance, The Bet, LOL).
Algonquin Theater Productions since 2004 has presented various musicals, including lSessions, which ran more than 300 Off Broadway performances.
National Pastime has played in New York, Washington, Phoenix, Austin, Scranton, Bucks County Playhouse, and Guadalajara, Mexico.
