| Movies Yanked Out Too
Soon? For new movies, opening weekend is a make-or-break period. Early
success leads to a long, lucrative run, while movies that don’t immediately
find an audience have abbreviated theater time. Recently, however, movies have
been disappearing from screens regardless of their box office top ten position.
For example, the hit “Iron Man,” spent eight weeks in the top 10. (By
comparison, 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” spent 12 weeks in the
top 10.) Perhaps predictably, “The Love Guru” had a disappointing opening and
made only $31.4 million by the end of its very short run. The steady decrease
in theater time can be attributed to increasing selectivity among Hollywood
studios in approving wide releases. –Kaitlin Krumeich |
